EDITORIAL...

I am extremely pleased and honoured to announce that for the first time in its history, Gandaki Boarding School (GBS) has come out with this kind of magazine with an aim to instil in our students the confidence needed to translate their thoughts into correct and acceptable English.  As we know that a magazine is a source of spotting natural talent for creative writing and a pedestal of purposeful expression of the knowledge and wisdom hidden in an individual. So keeping in mind the fact, this magazine is conceived to provide an intellectual arena for our young talents to showcase their creative abilities through articles, poetry, travelogues, memoirs, stories, essays and many more.

This is an age of great changes. In education too, we see fast changes. After 1990s there came the theory of multiple intelligence which was propounded by Howard Gardner, an American professor. This theory more accurately captures the diverse nature of human capability. I read this in bachelor’s degree and also taught the same theory to college students. I don’t know whether I made them understand the theory or not. But when I joined GBS, I myself got the concrete meaning of the theory as it is manifested in the activities and skills of our students. The only thing is that we have to realize and respect the uniqueness of each soul. Each of us is endowed with certain potentialities. So as a teacher, our responsibility is to facilitate them to discover their own latent talent onto the surface. We have to recognize, appreciate, applaud and foster the fine blend of sensibilities in the students – and thus this magazine is to be viewed as a platform for the children’s creative urges to blossom naturally.

The school attains its eminence in academic performances, games and sports, extra-curricular activities and co-curricular activities through the achievements of the students every year. In accordance with these facts, the magazine also aims to espouse the school’s spirit of knowledge, character and service through the collective actions, thoughts and aspirations of all the stakeholders. Through these collaborative experiences, students come to recognise their unique strengths while they cultivate their critical thinking skills and become more effective writers.

Eventually, all these, I believe would enhance their analytical skills needed to do academic work- in analysing ideas, making inferences, supporting opinions, understanding points of view, and writing for different audiences.

I am particularly grateful to Todd John Wallenius, a Ph.D. fellow, Danish School of Education, Denmark, who has been my infallible source of information. His friendship encouraged and inspired me to publish this magazine.

My thanks are also due to the principal, colleagues from the Department of English Language, editorial board and the students for their love and support. Likewise, I am extremely grateful to all the contributors to have been the source of immense help in breathing life into these pages.

Any constructive suggestions from the colleagues, students, readers and well-wishers will be thankfully acknowledged and incorporated in the next edition.
