CONFIDENCE
MATTERS!
“Hey Avin, stand up.”
“Yes, sir.”
“So, tell me briefly about the history of antibiotics.”
He didn’t respond.
“Avin, haven’t you heard my question?”
“Sir…Sir… I don’t know.”
“This is what you say whenever I ask you something. I don’t
know what you’ll do in your future. Sit down.”
Although Avin, a grade 12 student had been habituated to
those hopeless scolding of teachers, it still hurt him. He only knew that he
had spent two hours in the morning revising that chapter “Antibiotics” but by
the time his botany teacher called his name he went blank…totally blank.
Avin sometimes wished he could turn the time back to his
school days when he was among the intelligent students. He was so close to his
teachers and popular among his friends. His hands used to be up in the air for
answers even before the teachers used to finish their questions. He wouldn’t
even miss any extracurricular activities. He was an all-rounder student. He
passed his SEE with an excellent grades and joined science course for plus two.
Those bulky books, extended courses, new environment, was never easy for him to
start a new path in life. And his first terminal examination of grade 11 become
the worst of all. He himself was so much startled seeing his own performance. He
was listed among the weak and struggling students and that’s where all his
confidence shattered. Regular taunts from the teachers, sarcastic scolding and
comparison with other bright fellow friends dropped all his enthusiasm and
confidence in such a way that he couldn’t rise to his true potential once
again.
Self-confidence really matters in our lives. No one can
express themselves if they lack confidence. It plays a crucial role in
student’s life too. But have you ever thought about it? How can a student be
confident enough if he/she is repeatedly reminded that he/she is a failure?
When can a student think of starting any new things, if he/she is always compared
with the bright ones and is always forced to feel low and hopeless? How can a
student boost his/her self if he/she does not get an inch value from the
mentors? I know it’s a real challenge to all those students who are
undervalued, and who remain unnoticed. They need a little extra support, a
little more encouragement, and some motivation in their life to believe in
themselves again.
So, to the ones reading this, think before you comment on
someone, think once before you sarcastically present your views about someone,
think before you despairingly taunt someone. Never ever be the reason for the
loss of someone’s confidence because it matters.
